Tanzania is situated fairly close to the equator, and the seasons can be divided loosely into rainy and dry seasons. Most visitors choose to come during the dry seasons, as there is very little chance of rain, and the wildlife viewing is better.
Whilst you may experience rain, the benefits of coming during the rainy season are that the countryside is green, lush, and spectacularly beautiful. Crops are growing, and the animals have good sources of food and water. You will see plenty of wildlife during the rainy seasons, though less than in the dry seasons.
The National Parks see the most visitors during July & August and mid-December to early January. If you want the chance to see the Migration crossing the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti, you should visit in August or September.
Tanzania is spectacular. Just the name conjures up golden savannahs, safaris amongst African wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, geological features and lakes, the highest mountain in Africa, and magical spice islands.
The Serengeti is a truly remarkable place, famous for its vast open grasslands that allow for excellent wildlife sightings. It is best known for the annual migration. Ngorongoro Crater feels like a forgotten world, offering geological wonders and serving as a natural reserve with some of the densest large mammal populations in all of Africa.
Tanzania is also home to Kilimanjaro—Africa’s largest mountain. For many, reaching the summit of this majestic mountain is a life-changing experience. Additionally, Tanzania boasts some of the most beautiful islands, with white sands and turquoise waters. There truly is something for everyone.
Tanzania offers some of the best wildlife viewing on the entire planet. For many visitors, catching a glimpse of the Big Five is at the top of their wish list. Buffalo, elephant, and lion are easily seen, while leopards are harder to spot. The black rhino is very rare throughout all of Tanzania, with the exception of Ngorongoro Crater. Even here, count yourself lucky if you see one!
Whilst the Serengeti boasts abundant wildlife, it is perhaps best known for the annual Great Migration. Vast numbers of wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra and antelope, move in an annual pattern, constantly seeking fresh grazing. The plains of the Serengeti can be filled with these animals, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The wildebeest calving season is also a very special time to visit (January and February).
Tanzania also boasts over 1,000 different species of birds, so remember to bring your binoculars!
Tanzania is generally considered to be a safe place for tourists, especially as the majority of visitors will be looked after by their Tour Operator from the moment they land at the airport. That said, you do need to take the usual precautions and keep up with government travel advisories. All towns and cities have their share of petty crime, so sensible precautions are necessary. Wearing expensive-looking jewelry or watches and carrying cameras can draw unnecessary attention. At night, it’s best to use a taxi rather than walking around the streets. Tanzania has a fairly conservative culture, so please avoid wearing “short shorts” and low-cut tops. These can attract unwanted attention and may cause offense.
The places you stay during your Tanzania safari can be a source of unforgettable memories. Accommodation falls into three broad categories:
Hotels and Lodges: These are full-service facilities with private rooms or cottages and private bathrooms. They typically have designated restaurants and lounges, and some include swimming pools. Many lodges are architecturally stunning, made with local materials and inspired by local designs and the environment.
Tented Camps: Tented camps are permanent or semi-permanent camps located in areas with excellent game viewing. They provide many of the comforts of a lodge within private, spacious canvas tents on a solid base, featuring beds, private bathrooms, and good-quality food. Tented camps are more intimate than lodges and offer a more adventurous safari experience.
